In this eight-week course you will learn a number of strategies for dealing with stressful situations, helping you become calmer and more resilient, ultimately leading to a happier and healthier life.  The programme includes a combination of meditation practices, discussion, research evidence and skills for coping with the stresses and strains that life presents.

Who is the course for? This course is for anyone who wants to find out what mindfulness is all about and wants to improve their mental health and wellbeing. If you lead a stressful life, are suffering with anxiety, finding it difficult to cope, or perhaps have chronic pain, then this course is for you.

What will we cover? The course includes guided meditations, theory, why we react the way we do in certain situations, we become less judgemental, kinder to yourself and others, and get in touch with your own bodily sensations, emotions and thought patterns.

What it is not – This is not a relaxation class but you will most probably leave the class feeling calm and relaxed as this is often a by-product of meditation.

What you will need – a yoga mat and if you prefer to have your head raised bring a cushion or pillow.  You may also want a blanket as the body temperature can drop during meditation, althought the room is well heated.

Why attend a mindful course? There are many books and videos out there through which you can teach yourself mindfulness, however it takes a lot of discipline to learn it by yourself. In our classes you get the benefits of working with experienced, qualified mindfulness teachers who will guide you every step of the way and are on hand to answer any questions. You will be given access to all the meditations plus activities and further reading.

How many people will be on the course? There will be a minimum of ten and a maximum of fifteen participants on the course.

What are the benefits of meditating? Through meditation you will learn to notice, to stand back and to observe instead of being pulled by circumstance, feeling less trapped by particular moods and habitual negative thinking. You will develop a fundamental core skill of paying attention, without judgement, noticing what is happening in the present moment in your mind, body and the world around you.

Becoming aware of your thought patterns – Practice encourages you to recognise that some thoughts are not particularly helpful and that we sometimes catastrophise, which then impacts negatively on our lives. You will explore your thought patterns, allowing you to free yourself from unhelpful thoughts, enabling you to choose how you react rather than responding based on autopilot.

Learning to be kinder to yourself and others – A key feature of mindfulness practice is self-compassion and compassion towards others. We are so often self-critical and such thoughts can be very damaging to wellbeing and happiness. Mindfulness teaches us to recognise our inner critic and instead develop a more compassionate attitude to ourselves and towards others.

Your commitment to the course – It is really important that you commit to the course, this is partly for yourself and partly for the group dynamics. We understand that occasionally life gets in the way and you may need to miss a session for whatever reason. This is ok as we will help you to catch up.

Will I be expected to practice at home? Yes, home practice is an essential part of the programme. You will receive all the guided meditations and we will spend time in class discussing ways of finding time and integrating it into your daily life.

Will I get a refund if I cancel my place? If you cancel within seven days prior to commencement of the course you will be given a full refund. If you cancel after this or part way through the course then you will not receive a refund. We run our courses on small numbers and so need to have a commitment from all participants in order for the courses to be successful. There may be occasions when there are extenuating circumstances and these will be considered.

Will I get a refund if the course is cancelled? Yes, if we need to cancel the course you will be given a refund in full. If there is another course due to run you will be offered the opportunity to transfer your registration but you do not have to accept this offer. If we are unable to recruit ten participants then the course will be cancelled. This is partly because we need a minimum of ten people in order to cover the costs and also because of group dynamics.

How do I book my place? Book your place online and you can pay through a secure PayPal link. You will be asked for your name, address, phone number, email address and occupation. We will also ask you why you want to attend the course and a few other questions about your background. None of your information will be shared with any third party. The personal information about you is purely for the purpose of helping the mindfulness teachers understand more about you and your circumstances and why you want to attend the course. None of this information will be shared with the group unless you want to share it yourself.
